Treadmill line up

For over 30 years, Champions Health & Fitness has evolved from a small town gym to a large full-service health club, but one thing has never changed: owner Greg Lassiter’s commitment and compassion for helping people lead healthier lives.

Greg opened his first club, originally called “Body and Health Gym,” in Ayden, North Carolina, in 1984. With three pieces of equipment, a small aerobics room, and no members, Greg had a vision for the East. Starting with a bank loan of $4,000 and a rent payment of $100, Greg took a gamble while still working full time as a teacher.

After staying in that location for four years, Greg decided to focus on the gym full time and he moved the club to Downtown Greenville, a building on 5th Street, and changed the name to Champions Health and Fitness. After being downtown for five years, Champions grew again, relocating to a building across from Pitt Community College off Highway 11. With quality equipment, staff, and service, Champions continued to grow and was relocated to the current facility, a 15,000 square foot club on Central Park Drive, off of Highway 11, in Winterville, North Carolina.

Inside Champions, you will find the perfect balance of new, cutting edge equipment, along with tried and true staples of any large gym. Now a large fitness center, Champions strives to remain current, with modern equipment such as recumbent elliptical machines and trending group fitness formats like HIIT, Zumba and Boxing. However, Champions Health & Fitness remain true its roots, its small town feel, by offering impeccable customer service, knowing members’ names, and truly caring about them.

Greg Lassiter, Owner/Trainer

Greg Lassiter has been in the health club business for over 30 years. In 1984, Greg opened his first health club in Ayden, North Carolina while teaching Health Education at East Carolina University. He has seen Champions grow through several locations; starting with a very small gym with only 3 pieces of equipment in Ayden to the 15,000 sq. foot facility now in Winterville, NC.

A former college baseball player, Greg has an Associates Degree from Lenoir Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree from ECU in School and Community Health. Greg taught middle school and was the head football and baseball coach at Ayden Middle School upon graduation for four years before deciding to focus on his health club business full-time.

In 2008, Greg purchased the pool facility in the Cherry Oaks neighborhood and extensively remodeled it. This is now the home of the Cherry Oaks Torpedoes Swim Team. He converted the clubhouse into a top-of-the-line small community gym and fitness center. Greg still takes time out of his very busy schedule to connect with his members, offering personal training services at both Champions and Cherry Oaks.

In his spare time, Greg is a stand up comedian with the Southern PG Comedy group; often sharing his talents at benefits and fundraisers. He enjoys motocross racing, coaching baseball, and spending time with his family at the beach. Greg is married to Monica Stokes Lassiter. They have two sons: Adam and Stokes.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for giving us a chance to serve you. I recognize that you are the reason we do what we do. Without you, we have no business. People recognize me as the owner of Champions. The real owner of Champions to me consists of three parts: customers, management, and employees. We ALL have a responsibility in helping each other succeed. Please know I am never too busy for any of your concerns.

Sincerely,
Greg Lassiter, President
